What is Maintenance and why would you need it done on your aquarium?
Once you have an aquarium in your home, especially in the beginning of the aquariums life, it is important to maintain the system regularly and consistently. It is important to ensure that your system stays on course from the beginning. Regular maintenance mainly consists of two major components, both consisting of several separate steps. These two components are; consistent chemical analysis and physical cleaning of the separate components of the aquarium
Chemical analysis of water parameters
Monitoring the levels of water parameters in the aquarium is arguably the most important single variable determining to the future health and success of your aquarium. Elements such as Ca+2, CO3(2-), Mg2+ (as well as a handful of others) are some of the most important ions in the aquarium, which are essential to the growth of your corals and invertebrates. Consistent and meticulous monitoring of the chemicals in the aquarium is necessary in order to maintain these ions inappropriate levels. Here at Miami Reef Aquariums, we fully appreciate the importance of monitoring and maintaining these water parameters with the utmost accuracy.
Physical cleaning of the aquarium
Once the chemical analysis of the aquarium is completed, then the physical cleaning of the system is next. This may include but is not limited to:
cleaning algae off the glass, background, spray-bars, and other necessary equipment.
siphoning out large particulates and macro/microalgae from the aquarium.
removing original aquarium water to be exchanged with new water.
the cleaning of nuisance algae from algae scrubbers and other components located in the sump of the aquarium.
dosing the aquarium with any essential chemicals or trace elements.
